Kinzer and YOUR ESSAYS....

Effective Ways to Use Kinzer:

  • look for your search terms in the Index,

  • look in the endnotes of relevant chapters(the pp numbers will indicate chapters);
  • the table of contents (does he devote a chapter to your topic?)
  • his extensive Bibliography (if search terms are in the index and/or notes then there's relevant oooks, articles, gov't docs)
  • check out his other books, news articles etc
  • YouTube Kinzer with your search terms
  • go to his website(s) email him!!!
Some effective ways to use Kinzer as a model for the Essay (final version)
1. ways he structures his arguments: truth claim(generalization, interpretation) plus ' generic'concepts (catastrophic, success, pattern, memory,) + specialized concepts/proper nouns )Cold War, blowback, Castro, manifest destiny) + empirical evidence )actual events, people, places and details about them.

2. His intro states the purpose, scope and thesis/matrix of main and supporting ideas

*Kinzer and most of the scholarly sources you'll find are great examples of an analytic argument --as opposed to "research" and "book" reports.**
